Wahnapitae First Nation’s Governance Department helps to advance and support the community’s goals for exercising its inherent right to self-govern. In so doing, the Governance Department strives to build the capacity to implement and operationalize self-governance within Wahnapitae First Nation.
Vision
- To empower Wahnapitae First Nation with the governance tools it needs to determine its own strong, sustainable future.
Programs
- Implementation of the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement (ANGA)
- As one of the first communities to sign onto the ANGA, WFN is now working towards the 10+ year process of passing its own laws in specific areas
- i.e. Citizenship, Elections, Language and Culture, Financial Management, as well as associated issues such as Access to Information, Protection of Privacy, and Adjudication.

- WFN is a leading voice and active participant in B’Maakonigan, the central body that will help support all ANGA communities in their implementation journey

- Justice and Community Safety
- Wahnapitae First Nation's Justice & Community Safety staff is responsible for developing and implementing strategies/programming to ensure the safety and security of Wahnapitae First Nation, its members and its employees.
- This work is in collaboration with the Operations Department and its Emergency Management staff, the Anishinabek Police Service, other First Nations, the provincial/federal courts, legislators, and countless community partners.
